Sakura Kan Jiu Jitsu Terminology
The terminologies contained in this glossary are the terms and phrases used in Sakura Kan Jiu Jitsu and may differ from other Martial Arts systems. As our art is continually growing and evolving this list is by no means exhaustive. These may differ from other martial arts however the accepted terms are for Sakura Kan Jiu Jitsu
- Soke – (Sokay) Term used for the original founder after his death
- Kancho – (karnshow) Head of the Kan, Dojo
- Shihan – (sheehan) Senior Instructor 6th Dan and above
- Sensei – (sensay) Teacher, Instructor Ni dan – Yon Dan
- Sempai – (sempie) Assistant instructor - Shodan
- Joshu – (joshu) Appointed senior student.
- Yudansha Grades – (u-dan-sha) Black belts
- Kyu Grades – (Que) Coloured belts
- Dojo – (dojo) Training Hall o place of training.
- Mon – (mon) Badge or club insignia.
- Tatami – (ta-tar-me) Training Mats.
- Gi – (gee) Training suit.
- Obi – (obee) Grading belt.
- Osu! – (oos) Universal phrase of acknowledgment, yes I understand.
- One Gaeshi Mushu – (on-ay-gay-she-muss) Please may I train with you.
- Domo Arigato Gozimushita – (Do-mo-are-e-garto-go-zar-ree-muss-ta) Thank you very much
- Ima! – Start fighting anybody anything goes.
- Yoi – (yoy) Ready
- Hajime – (ha-jimmy) Begin, start.
- Do Gi No Shte – (doe-ge-no-shtay) Adjust your Gi
- Mati- (mat-eye) Stop, pause, halt.
- Yami – (yumm-ay) Stop, pause, halt.
- Mokuso – (mok-soul) Meditate.
- Mokuso Yami – (mok-soul-yumm-ay) Stop Meditating
- Kotai – (ko-tie) Change partners.
- Skee! – (ski) Hurry up move faster.
- Moichi Do – (mo-ee-chee-doe) Repeat, do again.
- Rei – ( ree) Bow.
- Tachi – ( touch-e) Stand up.
- Seiza – (say-za) Kneeling posture.
- Sawatte – ( sa-what-tay) Sit cross legged.
- Migi – (mig-ee) Right.
- Hidari – (hid-r-ree) Left.
- Jodan – (joe-dan) Area from the shoulders up.
- Chudan – (chew-dan) Area from the shoulders to the hips.
- Gedan – (gee-dan) Area from the hips down.
- Waza – (wa-za) Technique.
- Waka Shime – (wacar-shim-e) Mat drags.
- Kata – (car-ta) Pre-arranged forms.
- Ne Waza – (nay-wa-za) Ground fighting.
- Goshin Waza – (goh-shin-wa-za) Self defence techniques.
- Nage Waza – (na-gee-wa-za) Throwing techniques.
- Kansetsu Waza – (can-set-sue-wa-za) Joint locking techniques.
- Ukemi Waza – (u-key-me-wa-za) Breakfalling techniques.
- Shime Waza – (shim-ee-wa-za) Strangle techniques.
- Osae Komi Waza – (o-say-com-ee-wa-za) Hold down techniques.
- Tsuki Waza – (zoo-key-wa-za) Punching techniques.
- Keri Waza – (kerry-wa-za) Kicking techniques.
- Uchi Waza – (u-che-wa-za) Striking techniques.
- Uke Waza – (u-key-wa-za) Blocking techniques.
- Dachi Waza – (da-che-wa-za) Stance techniques.
- Atama – (a-tum-ma) Head.
- Kubi – (koo-bee) Neck.
- Kata – (car-ta) Shoulder.
- Te – (tay) Hand.
- Koken – (ko-ken) Back of hand.
- Seiken – (sea-ken) Front two knuckles.
- Kote – (ko-tay) Wrist
- Ude – (u-dey) Arm
- Empi – (em-pie) Elbow
- Higi – (hig-gee) Elbow
- Hara – (ha-ra) Stomach.
- Koshi – (koh-she) Hip.
- Kin – (kin) Groin.
- Ashi – (ash-ee) Leg or Foot.
- Hiza – (his-za) Knee.
- Haisuku – (hi-sue-koo) Instep.
- Chusoku – (chew-so-koo) Ball of foot
- Rangiki – ( ran-gee-kee) Fighting using fists only
- Randori – (ran-door-ree) Fighting using throws only
- Kumite – (koo-me-tay) Basic sparring.
- Jyu Kumite – (joo-koo-me-tay) Free fighting anything goes.
- Ichi – (ichee) One
- Ni – (nee) Two
- San (sarn) Three
- Shi – (Shi) Four
- Go – (go) Five
- Roku – (roe-que) Six
- Shichi – (sich-chee) Seven
- Hachi – (ha-chee) Eight
- Ku – (koo) Nine
- Ju – (joo) Ten
- Ju Ichi – (joo-ichee) Eleven
- Ju Ni – (joo-nee) Twelve
- Ju San – (joo- sarn) Thirteen
- Ni Ju – (nee-joo) Twenty
